Under-16 top seed Bhakti Parwani’s title hopes were given a fatal blow on Thursday after she was handed a surprise exit by 12th seed Vipasha Mehra 6-0, 0-6, 4-6 in the quarter-finals of the National Juniors Open at the DLTA, here. The fourth day of the tournament – which saw last-eight actions in singles – saw another shocker in boys’ under-16, second-seed Sushant Dabbas lost out to ninth-seed Denim Yadav 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 despite taking a big 4-0 lead in the decisive set.In the first upset, Bhakti started her game on top gear as she took the first set without breaking a sweat 6-0. The Gujarati girl’s ease at finding winners in the first set suggested this is going to be a cakewalk for Bhakti into semi-finals.However, Vipasha came with a different game plan and started to engage in long rallies with her compatriot. The plan was on the spot as the game took a 360-degree turn in the second set as the 16-year-old Tamil Nadu girl broke Bhakti’s serve early in the first set. The point seemed to give her a major boost as she broke Vipasha in the next game and soon the match went down to the wire at 5-4. But Vipasha managed to hold her nerve and served well in the final game to clinch the match.advertisement”She didn’t let me get comfortable in the first set and it was over before I could realise it,” said Vipasha, who trains at AKTA in Pune. “But I told myself that the match is not over until we shake hands and I decided to focus on my game more than what she was doing. Breaking her early in the second set gave me the much-needed confidence.”Moments before the upset, Denim also sprung a surprise defeat on one of the tournament favourites Sushant. The tie seemed evenly matched as both served well to keep the score at 3-3. But Denim, whose forehand and shot angles was creating issues for his rival, broke Sushant’s serve and maintained his serve to take the first set 6-3.Being threatened, Sushant came back strongly in the second set and played some strong forehand and backhand strokes to win second set 6-2.
